Glove Selection Guide

Spec It in Three Steps

Narrow the field by hazard, environment, and required protection level. Still not sure? Tell us your application and we'll spec it with you.

01

Primary Hazard

  • Sharp edges, stamped parts, sheet metal — Cut-resistant (ANSI A2–A9)
  • Blunt impact + cuts — Specialty impact (ISEA 138 rated)
  • General handling, grip, abrasion — General purpose (A1 or uncoated)
  • Contamination control — Clean room uncoated liner
02

Work Environment

  • Dry, precision work — PU palm, fine gauge (13G / 15G)
  • Oily or wet surfaces — Microfoam nitrile or nitrile scrub
  • Rough, abrasive materials — Nitrile scrub or latex, heavier gauge
  • Heavy mechanical / structural — Leather palm, 7G construction
03

Required ANSI Level

  • A1–A2 — Light assembly, warehousing, general handling
  • A3–A4 — Stamping, fabricated parts, light sheet metal
  • A5–A6 — Coil handling, sharp-edge fabrication, oil & gas
  • A7–A9 — Laser-cut parts, heavy coil, maximum cut exposure
Compliance & Standards

Know Your
Standards.

ANSI, EN388, and OSHA 1910.138 all shape glove selection, documentation, and audit readiness. Plain-English breakdowns below.

How to Choose Faster

Start with the actual hazard, then pressure-test dexterity, grip conditions, and documentation requirements. The right glove is the one workers keep on at the point of hazard.

Talk through your application →

Common Selection Mistakes

  • Choosing maximum cut level when dexterity is the real failure point
  • Using the wrong coating for oily, wet, or rough materials
  • Waiting until after ordering to chase cert documentation

What to Send Us

  • Current SKU or supplier reference
  • Hazard, environment, and surface conditions
  • Required ratings, sizes, and annual volume
Send your current spec →
US Standard

ANSI/ISEA 105
Cut Levels A1–A9

ANSI cut levels measure cut resistance in grams using the TDM-100 test. A1 = 200g of cut resistance; A9 = 6000g. Higher ratings are not always better if they reduce dexterity. The right level depends on the actual hazard, not just the highest score.

Find the right ANSI level for your application
EU / Export Standard

EN388:2016
Mechanical Risk

EN388 is the European standard for mechanical protection and often matters in global or export-driven programs. It covers abrasion, cut, tear, puncture, and impact, shown as a 4- or 5-character score such as 4543B. EN388 documentation is available on applicable product lines.

Request EN388 cert docs for any product
OSHA Requirement

OSHA 1910.138
Hand Protection

OSHA 1910.138 requires glove selection to follow the actual hazard, not guesswork. Hand protection should be tied to a documented hazard assessment, and the glove should match the real exposure. Supporting documentation matters when programs are reviewed.

Standard Comparison

ANSI vs EN388:
Key Differences

ANSI and EN388 use different test methods, so the ratings do not translate directly. ANSI A4 is not the same as EN388 level 4. ANSI usually matters most in US programs, while EN388 often matters in global or mixed-standard environments.

Why IGS

Whatever
You Need.
Solved.

We carry 20+ product lines ready to quote. But what sets us apart is what happens when the catalog doesn't fit exactly — we spec-match, source, or manufacture. Direct supply chain access means we solve problems that catalog-only distributors can't.

Full Size Run, Every Time

Sizes 6–12 with color-coded hems on most lines. No workers doubling up or going unprotected because their size is out of stock.

Documentation Ready for Your Audit

ANSI, EN388, ISEA 138, EN407 — full cert documentation per SKU, on request, before you place an order. No chasing paperwork after the fact.

Spec Matching — or We Build It

Have an existing SKU to match? A custom application? We find the right product, source it if we don't carry it, or manufacture to your exact spec.

Consistent Supply, Not a One-Time Pull

Direct supply chain access supports ongoing reorder requirements — not just your first order. Your program runs reliably, not just your pilot.

For Distributors & Resellers

Build Your
PPE Line
with IGS.

Support for distributors that need to fill spec gaps, respond faster to customers, and expand glove coverage without rebuilding sourcing from scratch.

Broad Catalog Depth

Fill product and spec gaps without rebuilding your sourcing base.

Private Label Manufacturing

Build private label programs around your brand, packaging, and target specs.

Hard-to-Match Styles

Find harder-to-match styles when standard lines fall short or customer requirements get more specific.

Responsive Support

Get faster support on quotes, specs, and documentation when customers need answers quickly.

In the Field

Used by EHS Programs
Across Industry

Buyers usually come to IGS when they need a supplier that can actually match the spec, support documentation, or solve a sizing or minimum-order problem without a long back-and-forth.

Spec Match

When the current glove works but the supply, pricing, or responsiveness does not.

Documentation

When EHS teams need cert support before an order instead of after repeated follow-up.

Sizing Gaps

When standard runs fail the workforce and productivity suffers because fit is wrong.

Program Buildout

When distributors need catalog depth or white-label support to launch a PPE offering.

Our workforce runs small — standard Small gloves were still too large and affecting productivity. Every other supplier turned us away over volume. IGS engineered a cut-resistant glove in the exact sizing we needed. That was over 15 years ago. We've been reordering the same SKU ever since.

Operations Manager — Footwear Manufacturer, Oregon

We knew exactly what we needed — the spec was clear. What we couldn't find was anyone willing to make it at the quantities we could commit to starting out. IGS built it anyway. Small batch, right spec, no runaround.

Common Questions

Answers Before
You Have to Ask

Common questions buyers ask about spec matching, certifications, samples, and private label support before moving forward.

Certifications & Compliance

Can you provide certification documents for audits or internal review?

Yes. Certification documents are available on request for applicable products, including ANSI/ISEA 105, EN388:2016, ANSI/ISEA 138, and EN407 where relevant.

What does EN388 mean on a glove spec sheet?

EN388 is the European standard for mechanical protection. It covers abrasion, cut, tear, puncture, and sometimes impact, shown as a multi-character rating on the glove spec.

What is the difference between ANSI and EN388?

ANSI and EN388 use different test methods, so the ratings do not translate directly. ANSI is more common in US programs, while EN388 often matters in global or mixed-standard environments.
Specifications & Selection

Can you match our current glove from another supplier?

Yes. Share your current SKU, spec sheet, or application details, and we can help identify the closest match or work toward the required spec.

How do I know which glove spec is right for my application?

Start with the hazard, the work environment, and the level of protection required. Cut level, coating, dexterity, grip, durability, and documentation can all matter. If you share the application, we can help narrow the right spec.

Can you help if we only know the hazard, not the exact glove spec?

Yes. A current SKU helps, but it is not required. If you only know the job, hazard, or protection concern, we can help narrow the right options from there.

What ANSI cut level do I need for metal fabrication?

It depends on the hazard. Light stamping and parts handling often fall around A3–A4. Sheet metal, coil handling, and laser-cut parts often need A6–A8. More severe cut exposure may call for A9.
Ordering & Samples

Do you offer samples before we place an order?

Sample availability depends on the style. If you share the product or application, we can confirm what is available for evaluation.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Standard catalog products typically start at one case. Sample availability depends on the style, and custom or private label programs usually have higher MOQs.
Distributors & Custom Programs

Do you offer private label or custom programs?

Yes. We support private label and custom programs for distributors and other qualified buyers, including branding, packaging, and target specs. MOQ requirements vary by program.
